The only way you can really get the true power of a novel, even if you know its beginning, middle, and end, is to read the whole thing through – this is what I’m hoping to encourage people to do. The aim of these reviews is to highlight fantastic works, with certain plot points given away not so much as to ruin the story, but to add insights for this review. University had ended for the second year and there were two months of peace and quiet before the onslaught of the third year began – I used this time to opportunistically cram in a few extra novels. I first read My Family and Other Animals in the summer of 2005.
